Twelve-Steps

A twelve-step program is a set of guiding principles outlining a course of action for recovery from addiction, compulsion, or other behavioral problems. Originally proposed by Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) as a method of recovery from alcoholism,[1] the Twelve Steps were first published in the book, Alcoholics Anonymous: The Story of How More Than One Hundred Men Have Recovered From Alcoholism in 1939.[2] The method was then adapted and became the foundation of other twelve-step programs such as Narcotics Anonymous, Overeaters Anonymous, Co-Dependents Anonymous and Debtors Anonymous. The process of twelve-step recovery has been characterized by Dr. Bob – one of AA’s co-founders – as “Trust God, clean house, help others”. [3] As summarized by the American Psychological Association, the process involves the following:[1]

* admitting that one cannot control one’s addiction or compulsion;
* recognizing a greater power that can give strength;
* examining past errors with the help of a sponsor (experienced member);
* making amends for these errors;
* learning to live a new life with a new code of behavior;
* helping others that suffer from the same addictions or compulsions.

Detoxification

Prior to arriving at Sunray Treatment and Recovery, our qualified intake coordinator will perform an individual screening with you to determine the level of care you may require. If it is determined that you will need to undergo acute or medical detoxification from alcohol or drugs, we will make arrangements for you with a local facility. While some drugs such as cocaine and methamphetamines require no medical detox, withdrawal from alcohol and benzodiazepines (i.e., Valium) can result in life-threatening symptoms such as seizures and need to be monitored. For some clients, detox from alcohol and drugs are possible in a monitored residential treatment setting. Based upon your screening, our staff will ensure you receive the recommended level of care at the appropriate facility. Clients who do not need alcohol or drug detoxification can begin the intensive treatment program immediately.

Co-Occurring Disorders

It’s not unusual for a person suffering from alcohol or drug addiction to also suffer from co-occurring emotional or mental disorders. Attempting to manage an existing disorder can often lead to self-medication, contributing to alcohol or drug abuse. Based upon your individual assessment, a Chemical Dependency Professional will be assigned to assist in tailoring a personal recovery plan for you.

Holistic Therapies

Holistic therapies focus on strengthening the connection between mind, body and spirit by stimulating the body’s own natural healing mechanisms.

While meditation is traditionally associated with eastern practices, the many benefits of meditation in addiction and mental health treatment are now being recognized. Regular meditation has been shown to decrease stress, anxiety, depression and even blood pressure and cholesterol levels while increasing levels of concentration, creativity and alertness.

Yoga is a physical activity that stimulates and massages the internal organs and glands of the body. This serves to improve the health of the organs and keep disease at bay. Regular, gentle stretching of the muscles, joints and organs ensures optimum blood flow, helping to flush out toxins, improve nutritional distribution and increase energy.

Drum therapy is an art form used in the spiritual practice of tribal communities. The purpose is to express your own natural rhythm through the drum in a noncompetitive forum that encourages creativity. Aside from being fun and releasing stress in a non-aggressive arena, drum therapy promotes a healing effect on physical, cognitive, emotional, psychological and spiritual levels.

The Low ropes challenge course is a group activity that challenges physical agility, cooperation and problem solving both on an individual and group level. The purpose is to promote trust and team-building within a group, learning how to trust and rely on others to work toward a common goal.

Educational Program Components

The Sunray Treatment and Recovery’s approach is based on three specific psychotherapeutic techniques, motivational enhancement therapy, 12-step facilitation, and therapy to develop cognitive behavioral coping skills. Motivational enhancement therapy uses motivational interviewing techniques to help identify internal sources of motivation to support abstinence. Twelve-step facilitation therapy is based on the principles of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). Therapy for cognitive behavioral coping skills helps identify and avoid antecedents to alcohol use and develop strategies to cope with craving.
